The school where children make the rules.

Imagine a school where pupils have as much say about policy as staff do, are free to skip classes if they wish, and call teachers by their first names.

You will be imagining the Sands School in Ashburton, on the southern edge of Dartmoor.

Sands is the "phoenix" which rose from the ashes of Dartington Hall free school, which collapsed in 1987. Sean Bellamy, a founder and teacher at the school, has just been named in the final 50 of the Global Teacher Prize.
