The Christian Institute has criticised the Government’s decision to drop its planned age-verification checks on pornography, and have urged ministers to reconsider.
Last week, after years of delay, the Government announced it would not pursue plans to impose strict blocks on children viewing pornography.
While some claimed the proposed measures would have been ineffective, others expressed their dismay that ministers were not doing their utmost to protect children.
An academy trust selected to take over three failing Steiner schools is preparing to move them away from the Steiner Waldorf ethos that underpins them.
It was announced in June that the Avanti Schools Trust had been selected to run three state Steiner academies in the south west – Bristol (pictured), Exeter and Frome – after all three were placed in special measures by Ofsted.
We have made it clear from the beginning, they will first and foremost be Avanti schools. This is not Avanti joining the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship, this is Steiner schools joining Avanti
The schools follow the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, which focus on the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of pupils, with an emphasis on art and imagination. Pupils at Steiner schools also do not begin formal education until the age of six.
When the transfer to Avanti was announced, the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship, the umbrella body for Steiner schools, said the schools would remain Steiner under the new trust, and “carry forward our philosophy of Waldorf education, which sits at the heart of our ethos”.
However, with the transfer due to be completed in the coming weeks, Avanti has insisted it never intended to keep the schools Steiner.
Key dates for schools converting to academy status on 1
June 2020
If these deadlines are not met, whilst we will try our best we cannot
guarantee your school will be able to convert on 1 June 2020
Schools open as an academy on the first day of the month. In order to open on the chosen
month, all the necessary paperwork associated with the conversion must be completed in the
previous month.
In order to achieve this, the table below sets out the key dates for schools planning to convert on
1 June 2020. The table indicates the final dates for documents and other information to be sent to
your Department for Education project lead and the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA)
in order to ensure your opening on 1 June 2020. If these deadlines are not met whilst we will
always do our best, we cannot guarantee your school will be able to convert on 1 June 2020.
Children and young people are caught in a "national emergency" that can only be properly dealt with by a new Cabinet post dedicated to helping them, according to an alliance of more than 160 charities and organisations.
The country's youth are being "menaced by 21st century evils" the newly formed Children First Alliance claims, referring to obesity and physical inactivity, adverse childhood experiences, rising mental health issues, dominance of social media and screen time influence, and socioeconomic disadvantages. Children have become the forgotten group in society, the alliance says.
