'Unconditional' Uni offers in the news.

When, thirty or more years ago, my sister was given a ‘matriculation offer’ from Oxford (two Es at A Level), my father was memorably furious. Of course my parents were proud of her, but as I remember him saying, the last thing to tell students before a major exam, is that they don’t need to work.

Well, decades on and unconditional offers are again in the news, the Commons Education Select Committee having turned their attention to this common phenomenon, at shall we say a stately if not urgent pace. The comments made by Ofqual to the committee have the air of the judge asking who the Beatles are, because many schools have been tearing their hair out for some years now at the inexorable rise of the ‘unconditional’.
