Stewart Duckworth Headlam was a provocative Anglican priest, a pioneer Christian Socialist and a powerful preacher. Inevitably, therefore, he attracted hecklers. One such heckler at a Christian Socialist Lecture, angered by Headlam’s priestly presence, bellowed at him: ‘Atheist as I am sir, atheist as I am, no man shall stand between my soul and my God!’
